American Express card statements list charges, credits, and payments. There is usually no running checking-style balance on each row; the new balance is a total on the summary page. Dates are month/day/year. A payment or refund is often printed as a negative amount or in a credits section.
A text-based American Express PDF is read in your browser. The file is not uploaded. If the columns on your copy differ from the notes below, change the mapping in the preview before you download.
Convert a American Express PDF
Because there is no per-row balance, the Balance column in the preview will be empty unless the PDF actually printed one. Do not invent a running balance. The export is still useful as a register of charges.
Typical columns: Date, Description, Amount. Date order: month/day/year. Currency on the statement: USD.
In the American Express account, open Statements and save the PDF. The CSV download Amex sometimes offers is a different file; this page is for the PDF.
Map Date, Description, and Amount. Leave Balance unmapped if the header is not there.
A payment should be money that reduced the card balance. In the sheet that is a credit, or a negative amount in QuickBooks CSV, depending on how the PDF printed the sign.
Delete summary rows if any were included, then download. Do not add a homemade running balance unless you need one for a personal sheet.
